The war in Ukraine has highlighted how new technologies from the commercial sector are being used to upend conventional military doctrine. Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation, discussed plans to produce more sophisticated drones and other autonomous systems, incubate military startups, and create a thriving domestic drone-making industry. Foreign companies are welcome to collaborate and AI software is being developed to make operating drones more efficient. Ukraine’s use of aerial drones and drone boats have helped the country resist and repel Russia’s much larger military force.
