Proposals to ban AI from singlehandedly launching nuclear weapons are being considered by lawmakers

A bipartisan group of lawmakers has introduced the Block Nuclear Launch by Autonomous AI Act, to prohibit the use of federal funds to launch a nuclear weapon using an autonomous weapons system that is not subject to meaningful human control.

This act would codify existing Pentagon rules which require a human in the loop to inform and execute decisions to initiate and terminate nuclear weapon employment.

It also prohibits autonomous systems from launching a nuclear weapon or selecting or engaging targets with the intention of launching one.
