Preliminary antitrust ruling suggests breaking up Google’s ad business by EU

The European Commission accuses Google of illegally favoring its advertising services over those of its competitors, according to a statement released today by the agency’s executive vice-president in charge of competition policy Margrethe Vestager.

It’s a pretty serious charge against what remains a core source of Google revenue: advertising.

According to Bloomberg, the advertising business brings in around 80 percent of Google’s revenue.

The commission says that Google may have used its market position to favor its own advertising services.

Google will have the opportunity to reply in writing and request a hearing, after which the Commission will decide whether Google has broken antitrust law in the bloc.

We learn that the European Union had been investigating Google for some time.

Its investigation into Google started way back in 2021.
