Researchers have discovered that tardigrades use waterborne chemical cues to attract mates. Just like humans, male tardigrades are attracted to the scent of females. In a new study, scientists placed tardigrades in a water-filled arena and observed how they interacted. The results showed that male tardigrades were more likely to move towards the female tardigrade when she was present. This suggests that tardigrades use scent to find mates. Scientists also found that tardigrades can follow scent trails in agar, a jelly-like substance. This suggests that tardigrades may be able to use scent to find food and shelter as well as mates. The study was published in the Journal of Experimental Biology.
