NASA Cant Open Asteroid Sample Box

#shorts #scinews #science news #science #science max #asteroid Bennu #NASA #OSIRIS-REx #spacecraft #asteroid sample #TAGSAM Good evening, I’m your host Niamherton here with a space update. Last year, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft touched down on the asteroid Bennu, grabbed some rock samples, and brought them back to Earth. But now NASA scientists have hit a snag trying to open the sample box. The TAGSAM container holding the bulk of the space rocks has two stubborn fasteners that won’t budge. The team can’t use just any old tools to break them open, since the samples have to stay pristine inside a sealed nitrogen glovebox. Any new tools also have to fit inside the restrictive box. So far they’ve accessed about 70 grams of material through another flap. But there’s still more trapped behind those darn fasteners. For now, the scientists are developing new techniques to gently crack open the asteroid treasure chest. What a cosmic tease! NASA goes through all that effort getting rocks from an asteroid, only to have them locked away in a box they can’t open. It’s like getting a shiny new toy for Christmas and then losing the batteries. Hang in there, NASA! I’m rooting for you to unleash those space rocks. For Weekend Update, I’m Niamherton.
