Microsoft is naming hackers after weather conditions like storms, typhoons, and blizzards

Microsoft has launched a new naming taxonomy to track cyber attacks, in which hackers are named after weather events like storms, typhoons, and blizzards.

They will be divided into five key groups; nation-state actors, financially motivated actors, private sector offensive actors, influence operations, and groups still in development.

If a new threat is unknown, it will be assigned a temporary Storm designation and a four-digit number.

Nation-state hackers will be named after a specific weather event that pertains to where they are from.

Microsoft tracks 160 nation-state hacking groups, 50 ransomware groups, 300 unique threat actors, and hundreds of other hackers.

They strive to include other threat actor names within their security products to help customers make informed decisions.
