The Meta Oversight Board, an independent panel selected by the social media giant to deliberate its content decisions, has released a report that supports the company’s content moderation actions taken during the height of the Covid pandemic.
The board is recommending changes to Meta’s misinformation policy and an impact assessment of how design features like Facebook’s newsfeed recommendation algorithms can amplify dangerous health-related misinformation.
It is also urging Meta to be more transparent when removing content and publishing information on government requests.
The board recommends that Meta keep its current policy in place as long as the World Health Organization continues to declare Covid an international public health emergency, as it believes continuing to remove Covid-related misinformation is still consistent with Meta’s values and human rights responsibilities.
