Linux ransomware BlackSuit appears to borrow code from Royal

Trend Micro has analyzed a new ransomware strain called BlackSuit and found that it has many similarities with another ransomware family, Royal.

In fact, they have so many similarities that they’re nearly identical.

Trend Micro’s analysis of the Linux variant of the new ransomware finds that the threat is similar to Royal, an example of a ransomware family that also includes Conti and other members of the Royal ransomware family.

The threat is such similar that it poses a threat to VMware ESXi virtual machines running on Linux machines, which are vulnerable to attacks from both Microsoft andTrend Micro’s anti-virus suite.

Ransomware companies may be able to make money by infecting Linux machines with copies of the same malicious code that infects Windows machines.
