Kalambo Falls, Zambia – Kalambo Falls, Zambia

Archaeologists have found evidence of a 476,000-year-old wooden structure in Africa, possibly the earliest wooden structure ever seen.

The prehistoric remains were discovered near the Kalambo River basin of Zambia, near to the famous waterfalls Kalambo Falls.

To date the wood, scientists used new luminescence dating techniques.

They dated the site to 426,000 years ago, which is much older than previous dating techniques estimated.

The findings challenge many of the assumptions we had about ancient humans, suggesting that Stone Age humans were not strictly nomadic but rather settled down here, using the forest trees to construct permanent structures that lasted for generations.

This study was published in the journal Nature.
