This week, rumors of a so-called ‘Global Jihad Day’ led to a tidal wave of dangerous disinformation and threats of violence against Muslims. Though the former Hamas leader’s call for protests was specifically limited to the Arab world, his words were intentionally misinterpreted online by bad actors to suggest worldwide attacks were planned this Friday. Right-wing fearmongers and racists jumped at the chance to threaten Muslims, even referring to them with slurs and vowing to bring guns out in public. Some schools closed and police presence has increased out of overcaution. Tensions escalated further following violent incidents in China and France falsely portrayed as proof of orchestrated Muslim aggression. While no evidence indicates centralized jihadist action was coordinated for today, the proliferation of Islamophobic lies continues to endanger innocent people. The spread of disinformation is no joke – we must stand united against hate and those who peddle it for their own gain.
