At the center of our galaxy lies a dark cloud called The Brick. According to new measurements from the JWST, there isn’t much star formation happening there, but there are still 56,000 stars out there. The team also finds that there’s an unusual amount of ice around the cloud, which should be a good sign for cooling temperatures, but instead they’ve found quite the opposite: there’s plenty of ice, indicating that it’s very cold near the cloud.
