This morning, Microsoft announced the release date for its artificial intelligence-powered Copilot feature and showed off some of its capabilities for the first time.

Six months after laying off the team dedicated to upholding responsible AI principles, the execs tried to make a clear statement onstage: Everything is fine.

The company executives spoke about the danger of over-reliance on its generative software, which was shown creating blog posts, images, and emails based on user prompts.

But Copilot isn’t going to take your job, they said.

In fact, it’s designed to be great at working with you, but not great at replacing you.

This is intentional, according to Sarah Bird, who leads responsible AI for foundational AI technologies at Microsoft.

Panelists acknowledged that Copilot (at least, at this stage) will be vulnerable to misinformation and disinformation.

But they also assured the audience that the human factor will continue to be extremely important in making these tools work.
