Android Screen Recorder App Found to Steal Data

Google has removed an app called iRecorder – Screen Recorder from the Play Store because it has information stealing capabilities nearly a year after its release.

ESET security researcher Lukáš Štefanko discovered the flaw in the app and reported it to the company.

iRecorder is the work of a developer named Coffeeholic Dev, who has also released several other apps over the years.

The malicious functionality is believed to have been introduced in version 1.3.8 which was released on August 24, 2022.It is rare for a developer to upload a legitimate app, wait almost a year, and then update it with malicious code, ESET said in a technical report.

The app had accrued over 50,000 installations when it was first uploaded on September 19, 2021.
