AMD is reportedly working with Microsoft to expand into AI chips

According to reports citing unnamed sources, Microsoft and AMD are working together to develop artificial intelligence processors.

The report says that AMD is helping Microsoft develop its own in-house AI chips, codenamed Athena, and that both companies are helping each other develop new GPUs for the purpose of AI workloads.

We have contacted AMD and Microsoft for confirmation and will update this story as soon as we receive it.

Nvidia currently has a commanding market share in the graphics processing unit (GPU) market, making it a natural choice for many enterprises since its GPUs can power both high-performance computing and AI applications.

Su claims his company’s MI300 GPU chip is very well-positioned for both HPC or supercomputing workloads as well as forAI workloads.
