Climate scientists are sounding the alarm: the world’s average temperature briefly crossed a critical threshold of 2ยฐC (3.6ยฐF) above pre-industrial levels last Friday for the first time in recorded history. That’s bad news, because if Earth stays consistently over 2ยฐC, it will dramatically impact the environment and its inhabitants (including us). In a โ2ยฐC world,โ it’s game over for over 99 percent of the worldโs coral reefs. Weโre also likely to see significantly more declines in insects, 16 percent of plants, and 8 percent of vertebrates. It could also lead several hundred million people into climate-related poverty. But hey, at least we had the warmest November on record!
