The U.S. Department of Justice has announced that it has charged two Russian nationals, Bilyuchenko and Verner, with masterminding the 2014 digital heist of the now defunct cryptocurrency exchange Mt. Gox.
After stealing some cryptocurrency from Mt.Gox, they allegedly went on to help set up the notorious BTC-e virtual currency exchange, which laundered funds for cyber criminals worldwide.
According to the DoJ, the BTC- e exchange, opened by Bilyukhenko in 2011, was the largest cryptocurrency exchange at the time.
It officially collapsed soon after the theft and filed for bankruptcy in February 2014.
Theft is a class A misdemeanor under federal law since there can be no damages.
