Tire-derived Fuels (TDFs)

Carol Etheridge is shocked when she hears that a company is planning to burn tires to fuel cryptocurrency mining in her neighborhood.

She lives in the state of Pennsylvania, near the Panther Creek Power Plant in Nesquehoning.

Other residents of the area oppose the plan, claiming it will lead to health hazards.

The company, Stronghold Digital Mining, acquired Panther Creek in 2021 and until now has complied with all air pollution permits issued by the state’s Department of Environmental Protection.

However, it now wants to add waste tires as a fuel to its power generation mix.

Many of the states in the U.S. have passed legislation restricting the use of waste tires in electricity generation.

Carbon County in the Penn state, has been neglecting the environmental impacts caused by the power plant for ages, stresses another resident Steve Chuckra.
