Riparbelli, now 31, explains that Synthesia wasn’t considered at the sharp end of the generative AI industry back in 2017, when he was first hearing about it.

Back then, there weren’t a lot of investors who thought that was very interesting.

He joins the call from his family’s vacation home on a Danish island, his childhood bunk bed behind him.

After trying his hand at crypto and VR projects, he started reading about deepfakes and found himself drunkenly fascinated by the potential of this technology.

Deepfakes, he explains, have the potential to make money because they use a very specific set of data that isn’t available to companies like Synthesia
