The Myth of Open Source AI

The Myth of Open Source AI

This morning, Meta releases another model, Llama 2 Code, fine-tuned for coding.

This time, it’s free to download, modify, and deploy.

It doesn’t come with a license, though.

That said, other open source projects like GPT Neo from the nonprofit EleutherAI have been releasing more fully openAI models in the same way for years.

Perhaps the most important aspect of this work, according to the authors, is that it democratizes access to software and thus improves security.

They hope to similarly democratize access to AI by making it freely available and open as well.

Llama 2 is not covered by a conventional open source license, but it does not need to be.

Other recent efforts to make AI more open seem to have gained momentum, the authors note.
