In a new study, scientists discover a previously unknown bacteriophage residing in the deepest part of the ocean, the Mariana Trench.
A kind of virus that infects and replicates inside bacteria, phages are thought to be one of the most abundant organisms on the planet.
This new isolated phage, called vB_HmeY_H4907, represents a brand new family of siphoviruses.
It infects Halomonas, a group of bacteria that is often found in the deep sea and at hydrothermal vents, and plays an important role in these environments.
The new phage is also lysogenic , meaning that it incorporates its own genome into the host cell.
Further research will be required to fully understand how this co-evolution occurred.
The study is published in Microbiology Spectrum.
