The Ancient Greek Telegraph That Used Water To Send Messages

Ancient Greeks used smoke signals to communicate, but they had a high tech version called the hydraulic telegraph. It involved jars of water and rods with messages inscribed on them. When someone wanted to send a message, they would signal to the receiver using a fire and then both would pull out a spigot and drain water out of the jar until the water level was the same. The rod would then float to display the message. Centuries later in Britain, civil engineer Francis Whishaw invented a more complex system for communicating information at a distance using water. This system linked two devices via pipes, and used changes in pressure to alter water levels in the receiving device. Despite successful demonstrations, the idea did not take off.
