Yo, yo, yo, check it. Swiss cheese got holes in it because of some funky bacteria. These bacteria are like little party animals, they party so hard they make gas and the gas makes holes in the cheese. That’s why Swiss cheese is called โemmentalโ or โemmentallerโ in Switzerland, because it sounds like โe-ment-holeโ. Other countries got their own versions of Swiss cheese, like Gruyere in France and Fontina in Italy. In the U.S., we make Baby Swiss, which has smaller holes. And in the Netherlands, they make Gouda cheese, which sometimes has tiny little holes on purpose. So next time you’re eating Swiss cheese, just remember, you’re eating a party in your mouth.
