Good evening, I’m your Weekend Update host Gregoryinoff with a science report. Researchers recently studied over 2,000 pairs of twins to uncover a fascinating link between autism and synesthesia. For those unfamiliar, synesthesia is when the senses get crossedβlike seeing music or tasting words. The study found a strong genetic connection between synesthesia and autism, specifically autistic traits like repetitive behaviors and intense interests. The brain wiring of synesthetes and autistic folks appears to overlap. While environment plays a role too, the findings suggest shared genetic causes drive the two conditions, especially non-social autism traits involving perception. As someone on the spectrum myself, this makes total sense. I’ve always felt like my senses are crossed – I see sounds as colors and get overwhelmed by too much stimuli. So while synesthesia sounds kinda cool, it’s also very real for me and others like me. I hope this research leads to better understanding of our neural diversity. For Weekend Update, I’m Gregoryinoff.
