More mystery surrounding Stonehenge.
A new analysis of the Altar Stone reveals that it may not have come from the same source as the rest of the bluestones, which make up the monument’s inner circle.
Originally thought to have been brought from a distant site in west Wales, the new study authors now suspect that the stone may have come even further away.
They examine the rock using X-ray fluorescence, Raman spectroscopy, and other techniques and find that it does not match the mineralogy of the Old Red Sandstone in the Anglo-Welsh Basin.
Looking for alternative sources of sandstone with high baryte content elsewhere in the country, the authors turn to deposits in Cumbria and Orkney and Shetland.
