World powers are getting really creative in their attempts to destroy each other’s satellites in space. Russia has developed “nesting doll” satellites that can damage other spacecraft, and China is working on uncrewed space planes that could communicate with the ground using quantum tech. Meanwhile, the US Space Force is developing satellites that can spray chemicals or use lasers to blind other satellites. And in late 2020, Russia launched a test anti-satellite missile that blew up a retired Soviet-era missile in low Earth orbit, creating a massive “debris cloud” and forcing astronauts on board the International Space Station to shelter in their escape vehicles. It’s a 21st century arms race in Earth’s orbit, and it’s only getting started.
