In response to the Canadian government’s new Online News Act, Meta Canada announces that it will test blocking news content in Canada.
The tests will begin immediately and will become permanent if the legislation passes.
Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez told Reuters that the company’s tests were unacceptable.
However, he notes that when a big tech company tells them, If you don’t do this or that, then I’m pulling the plug,’ that’s a threat.
Meta Canada intends to not make the same errors in Canada as they made in Australia.
In an official statement, the company emphasizes that its goal is to avoid making the same mistakes it did in Australia regarding online freedom of speech.
It does not intend to engage in the same kind of back-and-forth that led to the publication of the anti-censorship law there.
