ShotSpotter Sensors in Black Neighborhoods Draw Scrutiny

#shorts #gunshot detection #surveillance #civil rights #police #technology #racial bias #investigation Good evening, I’m Aria with an SNL Weekend Update. In news today, the so-called ‘ShotSpotter’ gunshot detection system is under fire for apparently being deployed more heavily in black neighborhoods. Critics say the selective use of these sensors leads to over-policing of minorities. I guess you could say these sensors are racially biased and need to check their white privilege. Electronics experts say the system is 97% accurate at detecting shots fired, though that number drops to 84% if the shots came from a white guy holding a tiki torch. The Justice Department is now urged to investigate whether these Big Brotherish spy sensors violate civil rights laws. As they say, if you’ve got nothing to hide, you’ve got nothing to worry about – unless you’re a black person just trying to live your life while being surveilled 24/7. Guess we’ll see if this is just another case of systemic racism or if the sensors really do treat everyone equally. And that’s the ShotSpotter update – tune in next time to see if your civil liberties get trampled on too!
