Scientists have created a monkey chimera, which is an animal that contains cells from two different embryos. This is the first time this has been done in a non-human primate, and it could have implications for understanding pluripotency and genetic engineering.
The monkey was born with cells that originated from both the mother and the father, as well as from some stem cells that were injected into the embryo. The stem cells contributed to between 21 and 92 percent of the various tissue types in the monkey’s body.
This research could help us to better understand how pluripotent stem cells develop into different tissues, and it could also lead to new ways to treat diseases or create genetically engineered animals.
