A group of scientists has discovered that it’s possible to recover secret keys from a device by analyzing the brightness of its power LED.
Specifically, they’re interested in discovering how CPU-side-channel attacks can be leveraged to gain access to the private keys of an iPhone 13 and other devices.
The team of scientists from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and Cornell University explains that they’ve developed a new technique for detecting and analyzing video footage of this kind of side-channel attack.
They suggest that future firmware updates should include features such as a capacitor to reduce power consumption or, alternatively, covering the power LED with black tape to prevent leakage.
