Pumas in Patagonia: Animals Up Close

A prowling puma is foiled by a barking alarm call of guard dogs in this new National Geographic series, Animals Up Close.

Bertie Gregory is there with a team using thermal imaging cameras to track the invading puma, and in doing so captured a behavior never seen before.

Pumas need to eat, so it’s no surprise that they can attack sheep.

The conflict between these proficient hunters and farmers who love to eat them has become a big problem for the survival of the species.

In the past, farmers have hunted pumas to keep their flock safe, but more often than not, they are replaced by another puma moving into their territory.

Guard dogs became a convenient and conservation-friendly alternative for some farmers in Patagonia who saw great results without having to kill the native predatory pummas .

Gregory tells Live Science that he cannot find anyone who has ever seen this interaction between the dogs and the puma.
