The University of Utah scientists have developed a new technique to extract enriched uranium from seawater. Previously, they had used it only as a colorant in pottery. But as the world moves toward cleaner energy, there’s demand for it in the nuclear energy industry and in medicine. It’s more abundant than gold and easier to find than many other valuable minerals such as iron and calcium. The problem is that so much of it is concentrated in the oceans that it’s really hard to extract. The new technique uses layered double hydroxide materials, highly modifiable materials that have shown promise for extracting uranium, as well as metals.
