This just in from the Galactic Star Lab: scientists are peeking into the far future of our Sun. After billions more years, Gregoryovich reports our Sun will shudder, swell into a red giant, and spew its outer layers into space. This forms a hot white dwarf at the heart of a colorful, cosmic cloud called a planetary nebula. Researchers have identified one of these dying stars in a star cluster, giving insight into our Sun’s twilight years. Originally, the star was nearly three times more massive than our Sun. But after its red giant phase, it lost 70% of its bulk. Its exposure reveals stars dramatically transform in old age. Jostovich says this first-ever find illuminates the bittersweet ending awaiting our Sun in its final act.
