Have you ever sprayed perfume on yourself, only to find that you can’t smell yourself?
Or your family member comments on how strong the scent is, but you canβt even get a whiff of it?
What is this nose blindness, and why can’t we smell ourselves as other people can?
According to science, humans have great noses.
In fact, one study from 2014, it was revealed that humans can discriminate over a trillion smells.
However, after being bombarded with unfamiliar odors for a few weeks, our noses become desensitized or nose blind to a particular scent.
This phenomenon is called odor fatigue, and it occurs when our sense of smell is exhausted by all the familiar odors.
It is not entirely understood why this happens, but there are ways to overcome this.
