“**Mother Shark Gives Birth to a Pup Without a Mate”

A shark at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago has become a mother without the help of a male. The female epaulette shark (Hemiscyllium ocellatum) produced a fertile egg that hatched into a baby shark. This is the first time this has happened in this species, but it’s not the first time it’s happened in sharks. Parthenogenesis, the process by which an embryo develops from an unfertilized egg, has been observed in other sharks, including hammerhead sharks and smooth-hound sharks. The baby shark is doing well and is eating a diet of finely chopped capelin, minced squid tentacles, and other finely chopped seafood. The staff at the zoo are monitoring the shark pup closely and are excited for guests to be able to see it soon.
