Moon Sniper mission launches from Tanegashima Space Center

Japan has successfully launched a mission to land on the moon.

Called the Moon Sniper mission, it aims to land within 100 meters (328 feet) of its target.

The Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) probe was successfully launched on September 7 from the Tanegashima Space Center in southwestern Japan.

You can watch a livestream of the launch in the video player below.

Just 14 minutes after blastoff, the rocket released a satellite to orbit the Earth.

Meanwhile, the remaining SLIM probe is on its way to the lunar surface.

If Japan manages to land precisely, it will be only the fifth country ever to successfully touch down on the Moon.

The primary objective of the “Moon Sniper” mission is to demonstrate the use of high-precision landing technology for future Moon and planetary exploration.

JAXA explains in a press conference that the goal of SLIM is to to achieve ‘landing where we want’ on
