Monti Ransomware Comes Back with a New Linux Variant and Improved Evasion Tactics

Ransomware makers behind the Conti ransomware group resurface with a new Linux version of the encryptor called Monti.

This new version uses AES-256-CTR encryption instead of Salsa20 and solely relies on file size for its encryption process.

Trend MicroResearchers Nathaniel Morales and Joshua Paul Ignacio said the new version is also designed to tamper with the motd file used to display the ransom note, employ AES- 256-cryptography instead of ssalsal20, and solely rely on the file size as the key for achieving faster speeds.

The threat actors behind the Monti ransomware reappear after a two-month layoff and target the government and legal sectors with their new version.
