Microsoft says it will take the heat if Copilot AI users get sued

Microsoft is telling customers that it will assume legal responsibility if they sue for copyright infringement using its AI Copilot services.

The company says the policy is an extension of its overall AI customer commitments, announced earlier this year.

In a blog post about an initiative called the Copilot Copyright Commitment, Brad Smith explains that the company will take the heat for any potential legal risks as more copyright owners question how AI companies handle protected works.

Microsoft launched a series of generative AI services it branded Copilot that has since been integrated into many a Microsoft product.

Smith indicates one reason for the partnership was to handle uncertainty in copyright law without driving people away from generative machine learning (generative AI)Copyright-agnostic services.
