We’re talking bubbles the size of basketballs rising up from the seafloor – wild stuff. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, so this is very bad news for our climate. The leak covers an area the size of 4,000 soccer fields and may be caused by deep ocean currents sweeping up methane-producing sediment. More leaks could be out there too. The researchers plan to investigate further before this underwater methane madness bubbles up into a full-blown crisis.
