Meta is building its first custom chip specifically for running AI models, the company announced on Thursday.
The chip, called the MTIA chip, stands for Meta Training and Inference Accelerator, and it will be used to accelerate neural networks.
As the company invests heavily in artificial intelligence, it sees an opportunity to bring AI agents to billions of people in ways that will be useful and meaningful.โ
But the company still has a long ways to go before that can happen, as the chip isn’t expected to come out until 2025.In addition to the new chip, Meta also says it’s introducing a new ASIC to help with video transcoding and a new type of processor to aid with video games, the MSIVP, or Meta Scalable Video Processor.
