Meta is withdrawing news from Facebook and Instagram in Canada

The Canadian Senate has passed a bill called Bill C-18, which will force tech companies like Meta and Google to negotiate with news publishers and pay them for their content.

According to the Associated Press, the legislation will take effect six months after it gets royal assent.

Meta removed news from Facebook and Instagram in Canada because of the legislation.

The company had been a vocal opponent of the Online News Act for some time.

โ€] Rodriguez wrote on Twitter that Facebook is in violation of the act right now and therefore does not have an obligation under it.

However, he notes that Google and Facebook do not have any obligations under the act as of right now.

This means that news publishers will be able to sue the companies for unpaid content removal.
