Mars Sample Return is a mission that would bring samples collected on the Martian surface to Earth for the first time, allowing scientists to analyze and study the material.
However, bringing the samples to Earth is a technical challenge.
An independent review board has been commissioned to evaluate the mission and recommend changes to the budget, schedule, and technology.
The board’s findings are not yet negative, however, and they recommend moving the launch date to 2030.
This will increase the cost and delay the mission by several years.
Representatives from the House of Representatives and the Senate have already expressed reservations about the mission.
