Its seismometer used quakes as sonograms to study the interior of Mars. New data challenges an earlier idea that Mars had a solidified mantle and a liquid core. The two research studies covering this new discovery agree that the mantle has a bottom layer that is not solid and above it lies the Mars core, a molten ball of mostly iron with a radius of 1,680 kilometers (1044 miles).
