Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna, thought to be extinct since 1961, has been rediscovered in Indonesia. The team that found the elusive animal suffered injuries including an arm broken in two places, a leech behind the eye, and one member contracting malaria. But the proof is in the camera trap pudding. With so few people having seen the animals, little is known about their ecology or behavior. But with its rediscovery, the organizations involved have called for better protection of its habitat and the species within.
