The iconic roar of the MGM lion isn’t actually a lion. It’s actually a tiger! That’s right, the King of the Jungle’s fearsome roar is actually the sound of a different big cat.
Sound engineer Mark Mangini was tasked with rerecording the lion’s roar in a stereophonic format, but he quickly realized that lions don’t sound very scary when they roar. In fact, their roars sound more like a giant yawn.
To make the MGM lion sound more majestic, Mangini and his team had to use tiger roars. And that’s the truth behind the iconic roar of the MGM lion.
