The new study doesn’t conclude that there is no lightning on Venus, just that there are other, more plausible alternatives to the lightning hypothesis.
One possibility is that meteorites hit the planet and cause flashes of light, similar to those seen on Earth.
The team estimates that about 35,000 flashes happen every day in the Venusian atmosphere.
Another alternative explanation is that these flashes are caused by meteorites.
Although this does not explain why there are no lightning flashes, it does explain why they don’t always appear in conjunction with one another. .
Next, the team looks at the different types of indirect observations that have been made of Venus, including radio waves, magnetic signals, and acoustic and magnetic signals.
These experiments all suggest that lightning might occur on Earth’s hellish twin.
But they do not all coincide with each other.
This leads the team to explore alternative explanations to these optical flashes .
