Lasers Deflected Using Only Air For First Time Ever

Researchers have deflected laser beams using only air for the first time ever.

They created an ‘invisible grating system’ in the air using ultrasound that bends the laser light.

The system works by using sound waves to create layers of air with different densities that act like an optical grating to deflect the beam.

While it currently only has 50% efficiency, it preserves beam quality and isn’t damaged by high power lasers.

This innovative approach opens up many possibilities for contactless control of light without lenses, mirrors or prisms.

The technique was inspired by how light bends passing through the atmosphere.
