New research suggests that ancient cave paintings may have heavily influenced the art of our Ice Age ancestors.
Using a psychological technique called pareidolia, scientists examine Stone Age rock art painted onto the walls of the Las Monedas and La Pasiega caves in northern Spain.
They find that, in most cases, the figures are based on natural topographic features of the cave walls, rather than abstract forms.
This supports the idea that cave painting was heavily influenced by its viewers ability to see faces and other meaningful forms in random patterns.
