Scientists say that 8 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into the oceans every year, and lost and abandoned fishing equipment make up the majority of the plastic in the ocean. So if you see a whale in trouble, don’t try to help it yourself. Just call the relevant local authority, NOAA’s whale entanglement hotline, or a local coastguard.
