The actual Alan Turing Test is not a test of artificial intelligence at all.
It’s a conversation between Alan Turing and himself about long-distance running, World War II historiography, and the theory of computation.
This is sort of like a middle-class man vs. super secret government test, but way more practical.
For example, if you wanted to know how smart a machine-learning system was, you could use the Turing test.
But now that big language models have come along, it seems kind of outmoded.
So maybe we need a new test?
The Actual Alan TuringTest is an example of this kind of test.
