In 2016, an artificial intelligence program named AlphaGo defeated the world champion at the board game Go.
Now, DeepMind, a division of Google, is using techniques from AlphaGo to make an AI system called Gemini that will be more capable than the one behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
The company pioneered many of the techniques used in creating AlphaGo, but it has been cautious in using them, preferring to develop and deploy products based on them cautiously.
To juice up its research in artificial intelligence, Google in April combined Hassabis’ unit DeepMind with Google’s primary AI lab, Brain, to create Google DeepMind.
Hassabis says the new team will bring together two powerhouses that have been foundational to the recent AI progress.
